US LEGAL SPECIALIST TO GIVE VIEWS ON BOAT PEOPLE

A free public lecture titled 'Refugee Status Under International Law: The Challenge of the Boatpeople' will be delivered on Wednesday, December 19 by visiting Immigration Law specialist, Professor Michael Heyman, Director of the Immigration Law Clinic at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

The lecture is part of the 2001 Byron Bay Law Summer School being hosted by Southern Cross University at the Lord Byron Resort. It will start at 7.30pm and be chaired by parliamentarian and SCU Council member, Janelle Saffin, MLC.

Some of Australia's top academic and practising lawyers are participating in the annual Summer Law School that runs until 21 December, 2001.

"The Byron Bay Summer Law School has become a well-regarded event attended by Law undergraduates from various Australian universities, practitioners wishing to enhance their skills and anyone seeking professional upgrading in fields relevant to their work," said SCU's Head of Law, Associate Professor Brian Fitzgerald.

In addition to the lecture on refugee law, another highlight will be the Sunday, 4.00pm book launch of the 'Indigenous Human Rights Monograph' based on the proceedings of a major conference hosted by SCU in Ballina last year.
