Several students in the Coffs Harbour region will get a pleasant surprise in the mail soon when they receive early offers of admission to Southern Cross University under a scheme for high per forming students.

This means they won't have to wait for the usual January offers of university places.

About 700 Year 12 and Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) students on the NSW North Coast and the Queensland Gold Coast were in the running for fewer than 70 places under an early offer scheme called Star that is based on results during Year 12 and in trial exams.

The Executive Dean of the Division of Arts at Southern Cross University, Professor Paul Thom, said today that the early offers would be mailed out within the next two weeks.

"This has been a very competitive process with hundreds of very worthy applicants nominated by their school principals," Professor Thom said.

"We hope that all of them eventually study at SCU.  However, we have only a limited number of places for this special privilege and so we have chosen the most outstanding performers for our Star offers," he said.
