Southern Cross University will offer a Bachelor of Nursing program in Coffs Harbour for the first time next year.

Head of the SCU School of Nursing and Health Care Practices, Chris Game, confirmed today that 20 places will be available at Coffs Harbour for the 2004 intake. A number of these will be reserved for students from Port Macquarie where SCU is negotiating with Port Macquarie Hospitals on a package of initiatives to train and retain nurses for Port.

“We are excited and delighted to be making this announcement,” Ms Game said. “We have had a close and productive relationship with hospitals and health care professionals in this region for many years. Now we can develop those relationships, including in areas such as aged care where we have particular expertise,” she said.

Ms Game said that the 20 places being offered in Coffs Harbour in 2004 would be first year places. “Our intention is to progressively increase the number of places available each year to 60 places by 2006,” she said.

“From 2005, some second year units will be available and in 2006, selected third year units. Any clinical experience required can be undertaken in Mid North Coast health facilities at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie,” Ms Game said.

The SCU School of Nursing and Health Care Practice is one of the most respected in Australia.

SCU is also negotiating with the North Coast Institute of TAFE to deliver a bridging program for Enrolled Nurses to enter the Bachelor of Nursing program and complete the award in less than two years. Assistants in Nursing would also be able to study for a guaranteed place in the degree course.
