Two university research projects, one focussing on aggression and frustration in sport, and the other on the motivation for volunteers involved in community events, will proceed next year with help from the Southern Cross University’s (SCU) Coffs Harbour Student Association.

The Student Association has joined forces with SCU’s Graduate Research College to offer scholarships for Honours students, totalling $30,000, over the next three years.

The first two scholarships were presented to Patricia Millers and Emma Anderson at a ceremony at the Coffs Harbour campus on Friday, November 28.

Student Association director, Mr Tony Mosley, said they would be offering six, $5000 scholarships for Honours courses over the next three years.

“They are for financially disadvantaged University students who otherwise might not be able to go on to the Honours level,” Mr Mosley said.

“This was something initiated by the Coffs Harbour Student Association. It’s recognition that not all members of the association participate in social and sporting events. We wanted to offer something for the academic side of University life.”

Mr Mosley said the Student Association was working closely with University management to strengthen the Coffs Harbour campus for the benefit of students and the community as a whole.

Patricia Millers is in her third year of a Bachelor of Psychology degree and will continue into her Honours year next year. She was selected for the scholarship for her commitment to university life and community work.

Patricia said her main interest in psychology was child protection and sport psychology.

“For my honours year I plan to conduct an experiment determining the effects of aggression and frustration in sporting performance. I also hope to establish whether these effects vary over skill levels, for example at a recreational level and a competitive level,” Patricia said.

The second recipient of the scholarship is Emma Anderson who is studying a Bachelor of Business in Hotel and Catering Management. Emma has also made a valuable contribution to university life, through the development of the Students’ Association fortnightly newsletter, as well as community and environmental work.

Her research next year will focus on event management and consumer behaviour.

Emma said she had been involved with the Bellingen Global Carnival and planned to develop a research project centred on “what motivates volunteers’’.
