New Alumni Court to be officially dedicated on Saturday

The 30,000 students who have graduated from Southern Cross University during its first decade will be recognised on Saturday, April 24, with the official dedication of a new Alumni Court at the Lismore campus.

It will be officially dedicated by the University Chancellor, The Honourable Justice John Dowd, following a graduation ceremony.

The court is located adjacent to the Whitebrook Theatre, where many of the university’s alumni have received their degrees.

It is an initiative of the SCU Alumni Management Committee to mark Southern Cross’ 10th year as a university.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Rickard, said the Court would highlight the role that SCU alumni have played in the ongoing success and achievement of Southern Cross University.

“The new Alumni Court will provide a special place of honour for graduates of Southern Cross University,” he said.

“It will also serve as an inspiration for those currently studying at the university.”

Southern Cross University will announce its Alumnus of the Decade as part of the dedication service.

The University is also using the opening as an opportunity for past students to make a contribution to the SCU Alumni Scholarship Fund. Alumni will be able to commemorate the year and date of their graduation by commissioning their own personalised red granite paver to be placed in a position of honour in the new court.

“Not only will this allow past students to have a permanent reminder of their time at the University but it will also enable the Southern Cross University Alumni Court Scholarship Program to assist potential students to share the experiences of those who have gone before them at this institution,” Professor Rickard said.

Professor Rickard said the university was also seeking to involve more past students in the life of the university through its alumni program.

"Graduates always remain an important part of the University's community and we are keen to find out what our past students are doing now.

"Through the Alumni program they can stay in touch with friends and lecturers from the university on a formal or informal basis and use the program for networking, skills development and to keep up-to-date with the latest professional development courses and lectures.

“Currently we have over 2000 active alumni members on the database but are hoping to collect information on many more and that is one of the key aims of our anniversary celebrations.”
