SCU seminar on how to be business savvy in the music industry

An innovative two-day summer seminar program on how to be business savvy in the music industry will be offered by the Southern Cross University (SCU) Contemporary Music Program on January 8 and 9, 2005.

The seminar will cover promoting live and recorded music, as well as legal and business knowledge needed to manage a music act or music project.

Associate Professor Jon Fitzgerald, Acting Head of the School of Arts, said there was a knowledge gap for many working in the music industry when it came to business, legal or copyright issues.

“Most people working in the music industry are there because they have a passion for music, which means that many of them don’t necessarily come equipped with skills or knowledge in the business side of the industry.”

“We designed this course so that participants will come away with practical skills and knowledge on copyright law, recording contracts, marketing and promotion and business elements.”

The seminar program is relevant to people working in the recording, publishing, management and promotion sectors of the music industry, as well as self-managed artists wanting to develop their business skills.

Participants can elect to take the two-day seminar at SCU’s Tweed Gold Coast Campus or, with additional study, can complete a fully-accredited University unit in Music Business.

“It is being run by leading music industry professionals with first-hand knowledge on what you need to know to be savvy and astute in your business dealings,” said Jon.

“Sally McPherson is a music lawyer whose current and former clients include INXS, Kylie Minogue, Eskimo Joe, Tina Arena, The Sleepy Jackson, and Michael Chugg Entertainment, and she is also hosting the first Independent Musicians Conference in Byron Bay in March 2005. Alan Gordon has worked as a musician and in staging, marketing and promotion, and is the author of Music Industry Management and more than a dozen study guides.”

“If students choose to complete the full university unit they will have the opportunity to complete practical assignments such as creating business or promotional plans for releasing a CD, staging a tour, or setting up a label.”
