University announces George Lewin Alumni Honours Scholarships

Southern Cross University will next year have four new scholarships it can offer to Honours students within the Arts Division.

Local philanthropist George Lewin has donated $20,000 for the four $5000 scholarships in the hope it will ease the burden on some students during their honours year.

“I have a friend who just finished at SCU – winning the University Medal - and she told me how difficult it was for her to cope financially during her honours year. I thought I might be able help others in similar situations by setting up these scholarships.” .

Mr. Lewin, who is the inventor of the famous Triton Workbench for woodworkers, said he wanted to give something back to his local regional university, and its students.

“We are encouraging women, and particularly indigenous women, to apply for these scholarships, provided they can show some evidence of financial need,” he said.

Professor Paul Thom, Executive Dean of the Division of Arts, said the scholarships would encourage the best and brightest to study with SCU during their honours year.

“These scholarships will encourage SCU’s top undergraduate students to further their qualifications through participating in an honours year.

With financial assistance students can reduce their paid work and focus on their academic life. Mr Lewin’s initiative in setting up the Scholarships is a welcome contribution to students and the University,” said Professor Thom.
