With the number of people aged 60 years and over expected to rise to 42 per cent of the population in Coffs Harbour in the next 11 years, there will be an increasing number of career opportunities in the aged services industry.

Those opportunities will be highlighted at a careers day, 'Aged Services - Careers for the Future', to be held at Southern Cross University's Coffs Harbour campus on Wednesday, October 19.

The day will provide information for school leavers, people considering a return to the workforce and students in tertiary education. The event is being organised by SCU's Chair of Aged Services, Professor Colleen Cartwright, in conjunction with North Coast Institute of TAFE and the Coffs Harbour Senior College.

Professor Cartwright said there were a large number of job opportunities within the aged services sector including catering and hospitality, furniture design, nursing, natural therapies, exercise fitness, information technology, landscape gardening and management.

"The aged services industry is not just about providing health care to the aged, it is also about providing the services to meet the needs of well older people in areas such as hospitality, fitness and information technology," Professor Cartwright said.

"There are great opportunities in the industry for people interested in a range of careers. This seminar will give them the chance to hear from professionals and students who are working with older people."

Professor Cartwright said the current population of people aged 60 and over in the Mid North Coast (Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca, Hastings and Kempsey local government areas) was up to 34% of the total population, well above the state and national average. That is expected to rise to 42% of the total population in Coffs Harbour by 2016 and 44% in the Hastings.

"The aged services industry is already one of the biggest employers in this region and will continue to provide a range of opportunities for workers of all ages."

The Aged Services – Careers for the Future event will be held at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus, D block lecture theatre, from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, October 19.
