Materialism, Money and Meaning will be the subject of a public talk by the head of the Australia Institute, Clive Hamilton, at Southern Cross University’s Coffs Harbour campus on Wednesday, March 30.
Dr Clive Hamilton is the executive director of The Australia Institute, an influential independent policy research centre. Dr Hamilton, who holds a PhD in economics, has experience in economic and social research and policy evaluation and is the author of Growth Fetish and a new book Affluenza, to be released in June.
The talk is the first in this year’s Doing Justice Seminar Series, presented by SCU’s School of Social Sciences in liaison with the North Coast Institute of TAFE. The seminar series, now in its third year, aims to explore current social issues and provide the regional community access to nationally recognised speakers.
Co-ordinator Anna Bloemhard said one of the key goals of the School of Social Sciences was to build connections with the community, public service, industry and business in order to advance and promote social justice in the region.
“Dr Hamilton has been described as Australia’s ‘leading environmental economist’. He raises a number of questions about capitalism and materialism in our society,”
Ms Bloemhard said.
The talk will be held in the main lecture theatre (D Block) at the Coffs Harbour campus on Wednesday, March 30, from 5.30pm to 7pm. Refreshments will be available.
For information contact Anna Bloemhard on 66593324 or Richard Hil on 66593105.
