Prominent human rights campaigner Julian Burnside QC, independent film-maker Kate Durham and UK human rights barrister Dr Angela Ward will be key panel members at Southern Cross University's community forum on asylum seekers on December 17.
The forum, open to the public, is entitled 'Australia's Asylum Seeker Policies-Where to from here?'. It is hosted by SCU's School of Law and Justice and will be held at Byron Bay Community Centre.
The forum will be chaired by the Honourable Greg James, former NSW Supreme Court Justice, and will include a screening of Australia's Pacific Solution, a documentary by Melbourne-based film-maker Kate Durham.
The documentary was made following the film-maker and an undercover BBC journalist visiting Nauru in 2002. It has since been seen worldwide on BBC, with the upcoming screening at the Byron Bay forum to be the first in Australia.
SCU's Professor Jim Jackson will also participate in the panel and speak on education inside Australia's detention facilities. Lynda Smith, North Coast-based human rights activist and coordinator with Rural Australian for Refugees, is also on the panel.
The community forum is being held in conjunction with Southern Cross University's Byron Bay Summer Law School, on until December 23. The Summer Law School is an annual event, this year offering seven law units to more than 130 law students from 17 different universities from around Australia.
The community forum 'Australia's Asylum Seeker Policies-Where to from here?' is open to all members of the public. Time will be allocated for questions and discussion. Entry is by a gold coin donation, with any profit going to Rural Australians for Refugees.
It will be held at the Byron Bay Community Centre on Saturday, December 17 at 7pm. To find out more contact Helen Walsh at SCU on 66203848 or email helen.walsh@scu.edu.au More details on the Law Summer School are available from http://scu.edu.au/law-justice/index.php/6/
