Southern Cross University will this week host talks, open to the public, by visiting artists Alex Selenitsch and Angela Cavalieri, and poet and sound artist Ruark Lewis.
The artists are visiting Lismore in association with SCRIPT, an exhibition about text and image at Lismore Regional Gallery from August 18. The exhibition features artworks which transform the written word into visual media including moving images, artists' books and drawings.
Artist Alex Selenitsch, senior lecturer in architecture at the University of Melbourne, freelance artist, poet, critic and publisher of artists' books will speak about his work at SCU's Whitebrook Theatre (Y204) on Wednesday August 17 from 10am to 11 am.
Mr Selenitsch's contribution to SCRIPT includes works on paper, artists' books and assemblages. While in Lismore, Mr Selenitsch will also judge the Southern Cross University Artists' Book Award, which opens at the NEXT Gallery at SCU on August 18 at 5pm.
Poet and sound artist Ruark Lewis will follow on from Alex Selenitsch, and speak about his work at SCU's Whitebrook Theatre (Y204) on Wednesday August 17 from 11am to 12noon. Mr Lewis, with work in national and international collections, collaborated with Paul Carter on 'Relay', the public art commission for the Sydney Olympics. He will perform at the official opening of the SCRIPT exhibition.
Printmaker and curator of the SCRIPT exhibition Angela Cavalieri, a former winner of the prestigious Silk Cut Award, a national print award for linocut prints, will speak about her work in the SCU art studio in V-block on Thursday August 18 at 1pm. Ms Cavalieri has two large lino prints on canvas and a collaborative book in the SCRIPT exhibition.
As well as Alex Selenitsch and Angela Cavalieri, SCRIPT involves seven other artists including SCU Head of the School of Arts Associate Professor Jan Davis, who will give an artist talk at Lismore Regional Gallery on August 20 at 11am. The other SCRIPT artists are: Steven Cox, Peter Lyssiotis and Michael Karris, George Matoulas, Albin Mullner, and Craig Wise.
The exhibition SCRIPT and the visiting artists are the result of a joint funding application from Southern Cross University and the Lismore Regional Gallery to the Museums and Galleries Foundation NSW.
Lectures by the SCRIPT artists at the above SCU venues are open to the public and free. The exhibition SCRIPT opens at Lismore Regional Gallery on August 18 at 6pm with a performance by poet Ruark Lewis. It runs until September 17.
