Southern Cross University at Coffs Harbour is set for strong growth in students and research following the appointment of the new Head of Campus, Professor Zbys Klich, who will also be the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for the whole university.

SCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Clark said the new senior position at Coffs Harbour had been created and located to expand the campus and the programs of the university, to develop and grow new research activities and further develop collaboration with the North Coast Institute of TAFE.

“This is great news for Coffs and an exciting development for the university at Coffs Harbour,” Professor Clark said.

“Professor Klich will also have responsibility for the university’s profile of academic programs, and will lead this campus into a new and important stage of its development.”

Professor Klich said he looked forward to meeting the Coffs Harbour community, working with its key representatives, supporting university students and living here.

“We have seen a jump in first preference applications of more than 60 per cent for our Coffs programs in 2005, against a trend of falling university applications around the country. We are building new nursing facilities in Coffs Harbour this year, as well as a major new university wing for staff and student facilities,” Professor Klich said.

“We have outstanding academic and professional staff and a dynamic student body. The University is totally committed to providing more and better educational and research opportunities in this region, and Coffs is at the heart of that planning.”

Professor Klich said the University at Coffs Harbour offered an excellent range of innovative courses which attracted students from around the country.

“We will also grow our international students, and I look forward to new opportunities for collaboration between the university, local government, business and our local communities. Working together we can deliver student choices, business growth, community support, as well as arts and cultural diversity. The University is here to promote learning and to serve our regional community. We hope to add even more to the quality of life and options for everyone in Coffs Harbour.”

Professor Klich will be welcoming the 2005 cohort of students during Orientation Week which runs from Monday, February 14, to February 18. Classes start on February 21.
