Southern Cross University researchers are hoping to record the memories and recollections of men and women who served in the Pacific during World War II as part of a project commemorating VP Day.

The project, which has been funded through a Department of Veterans Affairs Saluting their Service 2005 grant, will target residents in the Federal electorate of Page.

Dr Adele Wessell, from SCU's School of Arts, said the aim of the project was to recognise the different experiences of men and women during World War II and provide a record of their experiences for future generations.

"We will be conducting personal interviews with people who served in the Pacific to record their memories and recollections. This record will be then made available to the community through the council libraries," Dr Wessell said.

"The interviews and record will heighten awareness of the anniversary and its different meanings, reflect on the experience in the local community and create a resource for future generations and a lasting reminder."

Dr Wessell said she was interested in talking to anyone involved in the Pacific during World War II. They did not have to be a resident of this area at the time of the War.

"We have got a lot of ex-servicemen and women who have moved to this region from other areas and I would like to hear from as many people as possible."

She said the interviews would be done by her and colleague Dr Linzi Murrie, and would be recorded in writing as well as on CD.
