For many Year 12 students and non-school leavers who are heading to university for the first time next year finding the right accommodation can be the key to a successful and enjoyable university experience.

Southern Cross University's accommodation officer Mic Mead said it was important to investigate all the options early.

SCU has on-campus residential accommodation at the Coffs Harbour and Lismore campuses, and has a directory of off-campus accommodation for the three campuses, including Tweed Gold Coast.

"There's a lot of share accommodation available, but it is worthwhile having a look at what is around and not just waiting until February when University starts," Mr Mead said.

He said there were a number of factors to consider when choosing between on-campus and off-campus accommodation.

"The residential accommodation on campus is close to all the University facilities and all the costs, such as rent, electricity and water are included on one bill. They are also furnished, and the residents develop strong friendships and support networks."

But, Mr Mead said not all students were suited to residential college living and preferred accommodation away from the University.

"We can provide a directory of all the available off-campus accommodation. We definitely recommend people come and have a look and see what alternatives are available."

Applications for on-campus accommodation at the SCU Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses close on January 13. The students are selected primarily on academic merit, with consideration of equity issues.

Southern Cross University runs personalised campus tours at all three campuses, which includes the residential accommodation at Lismore and Coffs Harbour. To book a tour phone 66203975.
