Southern Cross University (SCU) will match dollar for dollar contributions made by staff to a Tsunami Trust Account.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Zbys Klich said following staff suggestions a trust account would be set up to allow staff to make contributions via salary deductions for the next six months.
“It’s estimated that if staff contribute between $3 and $5 per pay we can raise up to $50,000 over the next six months. The university has committed to matching dollar for dollar the amount that is raised,” Professor Klich said.
SCU will also establish a database of skills and staff expertise as a resource for the restoration and re-building activities of the countries involved.
Professor Klich said SCU had considerable expertise, particularly in the fields of coastal marine environments, social sciences, water and sewerage technology and tourism management, which could be put to use.
“The tsunami disaster has touched all of us and as a university community we wanted to provide assistance in the most useful and meaningful way possible.”
