Bourke or bust for Tweed student teacher

The best Christmas present graduating Cabarita student teacher Kendall Haverland could have is the offer of a job at Bourke.

As far as Kendall is concerned, that’s the best place to go to fast-track her teaching career.

Kendall has applied to teach as far out west as possible, hopefully at Moree or Bourke, because of the extra financial incentives for teaching there and for the credits she could earn towards a transfer to a highly sought after area like the Northern Rivers after three years.

“And besides, schools in more remote areas are also attractive because they have a much higher proportion of young, energetic and innovative teachers, making it a rewarding teaching experience,” she said.

Kendall is among the second cohort of student teachers to complete their education studies at the Tweed Gold Coast campus of Southern Cross University who are all eagerly awaiting their job offers from the Department of Education and Training.

Students who began the education program last year have since picked up permanent teaching positions at Tambo (Western Queensland), Upper Coomera, Kingscliff and the UK, said Dr Neville Jennings, academic liaison officer on the campus.

Anyone interested in studying education at Southern Cross University next year is invited to attend an information night on the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Diploma of Education at the University’s Tweed Gold Coast campus next Monday, December 4, from 6.30pm (NSW time) in Harvard Room 1.
