Nominations for the Southern Cross University Alumnus of the Year Award and the International Alumnus of the Year Award close on July 24.
The awards highlight the diversity and quality of the contributions Southern Cross University's alumni have made to the enrichment of our society and celebrate what can be achieved with a Southern Cross University education.
Alumni are selected according to leadership, stimulation of new ideas and services in their field, innovation and creativity, dedication and community service.
Southern Cross University law graduate and Aboriginal community leader Julie Anne Perkins was last year's Alumnus of the Year.
Ms Perkins, one of 10 children, overcame many obstacles to complete an Associate Degree in Law (Aboriginal Paralegal Studies) and then a Bachelor of Laws Degree at Southern Cross University in 1998.
She was a founding executive member of Grafton Court Support Service, an original member of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council to the NSW Attorney-General and was instrumental in gaining pilot funds to commence the Family Violence Prevention Unit in Kempsey NSW, a model for 26 other units.
Other nominees last year were James Haselwood, Bachelor of Contemporary Music, 1999; Paul James, Master of Business Administration 2003, Doctor of Business Administration 2005; Deborah Rockstroh, Bachelor Technology Education (Honours), 2005 and Rob Smith, Bachelor of Business, 1995.
For the uninitiated, an alumnus (masculine) or alumna (feminine) is a former student of a college, university, or school. The term is often used synonymously with 'graduate' and stems from the Latin, meaning foster child or pupil.
An alumni's institution is known as their alma mater. Alumni often support their alma mater by providing information to prospective students and current students and by making financial contributions to the institution.
Many colleges and universities like Southern Cross University provide continuing services to their alumni and in turn, alumni associations often support their university through fund-raising, alumni magazines, and volunteer activities.
