SCU builds links with Coffs Harbour resort

Southern Cross University and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort will continue to strengthen teaching and research links following a successful relationship in 2005.

The strong links between SCU and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort paid off for local student Luke Gerard, who has taken up a fulltime position at the resort.

Luke has completed a Bachelor of Business in Hotel and Resort Management through SCU's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, which included a five-month internship at the resort at the end of last year.

"I definitely wouldn't have got this job without doing the internship. It's really good to get hands-on experience along with the theory," Luke said.

Associate Professor Don Fuller, Director of Business Studies at the Coffs Harbour campus, said the relationship between SCU and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort provided many benefits for the students.

Four units are being taught at the National Marine Science Centre, which is adjacent to the resort, with regular guest lectures by key resort staff.

"The students get the chance to get real experience in a world-class resort. There are also benefits for the resort and the local tourism industry through research carried out by our students and staff," Professor Fuller said.

"We also aim to host a number of major conferences in Coffs Harbour, utilising the facilities at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort."

Novotel Pacific Bay Resort Human Resources Manager Mr Tony Perkins said the resort was pleased to have developed a strong relationship with SCU.

"We are very happy with the relationship and have seen benefits on all sides," Mr Perkins said.
