Southern Cross University builds links with Ballina

Southern Cross University has joined forces with Ballina Shire Council and the Ballina RSL Club to support the economic and social development of the area.

The University has signed separate Memorandums of Understanding with the two organisations.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Clark said the University was committed to increasing its involvement with the surrounding regions.

"We are working closely to identify opportunities for research, and social and economic development in all our surrounding regions," Professor Clark said.

"We are delighted to be able to develop formal relationships with both the Ballina Shire Council and the Ballina RSL Club, which we hope will provide mutual benefits for both parties and the community," Professor Clark said.

"These two agreements are a prime example of how we can work closely with the private and public sector to build strength in our communities and contribute to the overall economic and social development of the region."

Southern Cross University has already begun work with the Ballina Shire Council through a number of research projects.

The Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre, based at the Lismore campus, is working with the Council on a tourism and economic development project, while Professor Peter Baverstock, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, is providing input on the Council's sustainability strategy.

Southern Cross University also has a long-standing relationship with the Ballina RSL which supports a tourism scholarship and student internships.

"Ballina RSL Club values its long association with Southern Cross University," Ballina RSL Club Board Chairman Bob Grant said.

"The Club supports the Ballina RSL Scholarship as well as tourism internships. This MOU marks the beginning of an expanded partnership. Research collaboration will help us make informed business decisions about services. We also look forward to working with the University on community initiatives of common interest," Mr Grant said.
