An exhibition to draw you in

The conventional view of what might constitute a drawing is being challenged at DRAW – an exhibition showing at Southern Cross University’s Next Art Gallery this month.

Curated by Jan Davis, Gary Jolley and Murray Paterson, the exhibition focuses on the pleasure of making marks and presents a range of works that include dedicated doodles, machine-made drawings, animated drawings, edible drawings and drawings found in the landscape. These drawings are ends in themselves rather than studies in preparation for grander works.

Young artists will be showing alongside more experienced practitioners but all the artists selected demonstrate (in various materials and on a range of surfaces) the state of rapture or reverie implicit in the act of drawing.

The artists featured include academics and students such as John Smith, Katrina Kell, Emma Rochester, Stephen Spurrier, Jan Davis, Gary Jolley, Mitchell Brennan and Vitor Santos among others.

The exhibition will be showing at Next Art Gallery, Southern Cross University between the 8th and 23rd May, 2007 with the opening on Tuesday the 8th at 5pm.
