Lennox Head teenager’s top UAI wins her $15,000

When Lennox Head teenager Carly Bindon was sick and no mainstream doctors could diagnose what was wrong with her, she turned to a naturopath for treatment.
That positive experience led to her regaining her health and shaped the course of her future.
Carly applied to study for a Bachelor of Naturopathy degree at Southern Cross University and focused all of her energy on gaining the best mark she could for her 2006 Higher School Certificate at Xavier Catholic College, Skennar’s Head.
Now her UAI mark of 97.9 has been rewarded with a $15,000 Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship, presented recently at a ceremony at Invercauld House, Goonellabah.
Carly joins four other recipients of a Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship, 25 recipients of industry, government and benefactor scholarships and 17 recipients of on-going scholarships across the University’s three campuses.
“I am absolutely thrilled because this will make studying at university so much easier,” Carly said.
“I am glad that I can study the course I am really passionate about and still stay in the local area.
“When I was sick about a year-and-a-half ago, I was feeling very tired and weak all of the time. I went to a number of doctors who each examined me and said I was fine. They couldn’t find anything wrong. But I still felt really sick all of the time.
“Then I went to a naturopath and he was able to determine I had a wheat allergy. With dietary changes and a herbal tonic, my health improved rapidly.
“That is what has inspired me to study naturopathy – coupled with the fact I have always been interested in helping others.”
The five recipients of Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships were: Carly Bindon, Bachelor of Naturopathy, Jessica Harvey, Associate Degree in Law (Paralegal Studies), Maia Osborn, Bachelor of Education, Luke Turner, Bachelor of Education and Adam Brownell, Bachelor of Business in Hotel and Resort Management.
