Swell week for surfing students

Former women’s world surfing champion Chelsea Hedges and surfing legend Jodie Cooper will be rising early next Monday (October 22), not for a surf but for a good cause at Southern Cross University’s Tweed Gold Coast campus.
2005 world champion and current world number five Chelsea, from Tweed Heads, and South Golden Beach’s Jodie Cooper, the runner-up for the world title in 1985, will be guests at a Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast. It has been organised by the university’s Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies) students as the culmination of their year-long studies.
The breakfast is one of a host of media and public relation events scheduled by the enterprising students. The program of events also includes the launch of a Surfing Studies yearbook and video, the launch of the International Student Surf Challenge and a girls’ learn-to-surf beach party at Currumbin Beach. Students will be also assisting with a media event for the Australian Junior Surf Team at Surfing Australia’s Casuarina headquarters.
“Rather than do another essay or stage hypothetical events, this is a great opportunity for the students to showcase their practical skills while conducting real-world events,” said course coordinator Jak Carroll.
“It promises to be a hectic but fantastic week in terms of experience gained. Organising and hosting the events not only gives them a chance to interact with members of the surfing fraternity and the Tweed Gold Coast community, but also to gain insights into how the media works.”
The Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies) course is for those hoping to work in the business side of the surfing industry and applications for 2008 are still open.
