University and business community gear up to welcome students

Southern Cross University will welcome thousands of new and returning students to its Lismore campus in February.

As part of Orientation Week, which starts on February 19, the University is hoping to encourage the involvement of local businesses, many of which will benefit from the influx of students.

Student Affairs Officer Ms Ann-Maree Wilkinson and Simon Kaldy, from Student Services, are organising social activities on campus and daily tours of the Lismore CBD to familiarise students with the city.

“The students who move to this region to study contribute a great deal to the Lismore economy and to the vibrancy of the city and we welcome the ongoing support of the business community,” Mr Kaldy said.

“One of the new activities this year will be daily tours of Lismore City, including the shopping precincts and health and recreation centres.

“We have received some gift hampers from the Lismore Visitors Information Centre and iPods from the University Co-op Bookshop and would welcome additional support,” Mr Kaldy said.

Orientation Week will kick off on Monday, February 19, and be opened by Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Clark with a Welcome to Kuntri by Aunty Irene Harrington.

There will be information booths and entertainment throughout the week. Activities will culminate with the inaugural alcohol-free SCU O-Week Pool Party at the Lismore Memorial Pool on Friday, February 23.
