Coffs student to receive new psychology scholarship

The transition to university life will be made a little easier for Coffs Harbour’s Megan Upfield, who is the recipient of one of more than 80 scholarships for Southern Cross University students.
Megan will receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Bachelor of Psychology Scholarship, worth $5000 each year for four years, at a Scholarship Presentation at the Coffs Harbour campus on Wednesday, February 20.
“I’ve always had an interest in human behaviour and would really like to help people,” Megan said. “It’s very exciting to get this scholarship - the money is really going to help.”
The 18-year-old completed Year 12 at the Coffs Harbour Senior College and is looking forward to the move to University.
“The Coffs Harbour campus has a really nice atmosphere so it will be nice to stay around. I really liked the idea of having a bit more one-on-one attention, rather than going to a big city university,” Megan said.
“It means I’m not going to have the stresses of moving away and I’ll be able to focus on the academic side of uni.”
The Bachelor of Psychology Scholarship was offered for the first time in 2008 as part of the Rural Mental Health Scholarship program, which is designed to encourage regional and rural students to study psychology.
Scholarships valued at more than $355,000 will be awarded to more than 80 students enrolled at Southern Cross University this year – the highest number of scholarships in the program’s 13-year history. Most are valued at $5000 per year and are supported by the Vice-Chancellor, community groups, trusts and industry partners, including new supporters First National Real Estate, the Far North Coast Law Society, NSW Sport and Recreation, ANZ and Norco.
Fifty new scholarships are being offered in 2008, including eight Honours scholarships, five Tweed Shire Council scholarships and three Lismore City Council scholarships.
