Flexible learning brings university dreams closer

If you dream about getting a university degree but lack the confidence or formal entry qualifications to apply, now could be the time to act.

Southern Cross University’s Preparing for Success program offers a doorway into the University and is now being offered to Tweed and Gold Coast residents at evenings and weekends to offer flexibility to those juggling work and family commitments.

The course is designed to smooth the path for would-be undergraduates by teaching them the practical research, computing and analytical skills they need to pursue their academic studies.

Preparing for Success lecturer Lyn Gannon said that the course broke down the barriers for those who had their heart set on a degree but didn’t quite meet the entry requirements.

“The course is useful for school leavers or TAFE students who have taken the vocational strand of learning but would now like to go to university, or for those who have spent time away from the academic environment for family or personal reasons and want to brush up their skills,” Ms Gannon said.

“We train students in using the tools they need to make their studies a success, from accessing research resources to critical thinking and academic essay writing.

“It’s like a scaffold which is gradually removed as the student grows and develops, leaving them confident and able to work independently in the academic setting.”

Graduates of the program gain a grade from High Distinction through to Distinction, Credit, Pass and Fail which is translated to an OP for Queensland students (or UAI for NSW students) that can be used to apply for a degree program of their choice at Southern Cross University.

Preparing for Success is also offered at the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses and is also available by distance education. As there is no HECS fee charged to students, the course is free.

Former Preparing for Success student Vicki Marr said the course at the Tweed Gold Coast campus helped her to return to her studies for a Bachelor of Business Administration after a break of two years due to serious illness.

“As I recovered and re-evaluated my life I knew that completing my studies was what I really wanted to do, but I was nervous about going back after such a long time away,” said Ms Marr.

“The lecturers at the Tweed Gold Coast campus were patient and encouraging and really went out of their way to assist students in their endeavours.

“Juggling studies with work and a family is a big challenge, but the University offers lots of flexible options, and these new classes can only help students achieve their goals,” she said.

Classes will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and on Saturday mornings.
