Legends of league on display

The Howell Cup and the Anthony Shield, two of the most historically significant rugby league trophies in the Northern Rivers region will take pride of place at the League of Legends Exhibition at Southern Cross University.
The exhibition, to celebrate the centenary of rugby league in Australia and the Northern Rivers, will be open for two weeks from Thursday, May 29, and will be housed in the SCU Library’s exhibition space.
Both trophies have been rescued from obscurity and possible destruction. The Howell Cup has resurfaced after years of being hidden away and forgotten in a local hotel cellar. The Anthony Shield, donated by former Post Master General Larry Anthony in the mid-1950s, was rescued from almost certain destruction by an observant worker at the Lismore tip a few years back.
The trophies are part of an exhibition being held jointly by local historians and Southern Cross University in conjunction with the National Museum and the Richmond River Historical Society.
One of the few official celebrations of league’s centenary to be held on the North Coast, the exhibition will combine significant local artefacts and memorabilia alongside the national displays.
The League of Legends display offers a window to the past, looking back on rugby league’s history as it evolved both nationally and here in the Richmond River region through photos, trophies, team jumpers and more.
The launch will also bring together a number of local and national league legends, whose stories and reflections will add to the impressive displays.
The national component is part of the major exhibition, League of Legends: 100 Years of Rugby League in Australia, currently touring regional Australia. The exhibition was developed and presented by the National Museum of Australia with the Centenary of Rugby League Committee.
