New opportunities for Tweed Gold Coast students

Having recorded the largest percentage increase in commencing students for all NSW universities in 2007*, Southern Cross University is now moving to introduce a range of new courses for people wishing to study in the Tweed Gold Coast region.
The University will be offering three new courses - the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, Bachelor of Behavioural Science and Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) – in 2009, to be taught at premises in Caloola Drive, Tweed Heads.
This is the first time Occupational Therapy has been offered in the Gold Coast region and will provide specialised training in an area that is showing increasing demand for qualified professionals.
Professor Paul Clark, Southern Cross University Vice-Chancellor, said the University was delighted to be introducing these new courses in the Tweed Gold Coast region.
“Demand for our courses is growing strongly across all our campuses. We have developed strong links with a range of organisations and industries at the southern end of the Gold Coast and we are looking forward to increasing our presence and providing new opportunities in this fast-growing region,” Professor Clark said.
“Construction of our major new campus, located within the Gold Coast Airport Development Park and close to North Kirra Beach, is under way. We've also now secured a long-term lease for premises, to be known as SCU Lakeside, at the Lakeside Christian Centre complex.
“We are delighted to be utilising these facilities and thank the Lakeside Centre for agreeing to lease us such a terrific space so close to beautiful Kirra Beach.”
Professor Clark said the Lakeside site in Caloola Drive, Tweed Heads, was ideally situated just a block from the Queensland border.
The four-year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy course and the three-year Bachelor of Behavioural Science are being offered through the School of Health and Human Sciences. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) is offered through the School of Education and prepares graduates to teach children from birth to eight years. It is also being offered at the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses.
The courses will be in addition to the existing suite of business, law, tourism, education, social science and sport management courses already offered at the Brett Street campus, Tweed Heads.
“Our decision to introduce these new courses has been welcomed by industry and employers throughout this region, and we are thrilled to be able to offer them for the first time in 2009,” Professor Clark said.
“This is a great opportunity for people in this region to study locally.”
