Planning your career is the focus of an expo being held at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Tuesday, April 8.

The expo, co-hosted by Southern Cross University and Griffith University, aims to ‘connect industry to the next generation of professionals’.

University students are encouraged to attend to meet with key organisations in the tourism, hospitality, events and sporting industries.

Southern Cross University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management has been busy sourcing new and interesting employers to attend Careers Day 2008 who are keen to share their industry knowledge and experience.

Among the 35 organisations attending are representatives from the Australian Tourism Export Council, hotels Sheraton Mirage and Rydges, Meetings and Events Australia, Voyages hotels and resorts, Hayman Island Resort, Australian Kayaking Adventures, Host Plus superannuation, Australian Football League (AFL) Gold Coast, Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast, Provincial Personnel recruitment, Thrifty Car Rentals, Environmental Protection Agency QLD, Holidays on Location travel agency, MS Readathon (Multiple Sclerosis Society) and the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Marketing team.

Those seeking career opportunities in a variety of industries and sectors - not just in hospitality and tourism - will gain valuable knowledge from attending, said co-organiser Joanne Cooper, a Southern Cross University internship officer.

Some of the current positions being advertised by organisations attending Careers Day include tour guide, travel consultant, activities organiser, graphic artist, show presenter and many more, Joanne said, including jobs in the fields of nursing, information technology, media, sales and marketing.

“Businesses and organisations are very keen to attend Careers Day in order to assist students in finding out more detailed information about the various industries in which they can find satisfying careers,” Joanne said. “It also gives them the opportunity to promote their organisation, especially for internship programs. This year we have 12 new organisations attending for the first time which is very encouraging.”

A number of lively, interactive workshops and panel discussions will be held on the day including ‘The Interview Stakes Workshop’ which will focus on the skills needed to complete a successful interview, and a presentation by a panel of employers, titled ‘Keeping Your Career on Track’.

‘The Presentation Handicap’ workshop will focus on the presentation skills required to get that interview and make a memorable impact - for all the right reasons!

Careers Day 2008 is being held at the Gold Coast Turf Club, Racecourse Drive, Bundall, from noon until 4.30pm on April 8, 2008.

Southern Cross University students can book a seat on the bus driving up for the event, and must book to attend specific workshops or panel presentations.
