School celebrates students' success

Bonalbo Central School has plenty to celebrate as the school year comes to a close, with six of their 10 Year 12 students being offered a place at Southern Cross University for 2009.
The small school, west of Casino, which has a total student population of 180 students from kindergarten to Year 12, is delighted with the success of their students.
Year 12 advisor Sharon Tucker said five of the six students would be starting their degrees next year, while one of the students had decided to defer for a year.
“This is a great stepping stone for these students who don’t have to make the massive move to the city to go to university,” Ms Tucker said.
“A lot of those kids would cut it anywhere but they have chosen to stay in the region.
“They see this is a great alternative rather than having to go to the city. And there’s great choice in courses. They are going to be doing degrees in exercise science, nursing and business.
“Southern Cross University has been very supportive of us and is willing to come out here and talk to the kids and provide information to them on an individual basis.
“The students have also had lots of access to the Lismore campus so they already feel quite comfortable.”
The need for greater participation in higher education has been highlighted in the Bradley Review of Higher Education, which was released this week.
The review has warned that Australia needs to train and educate more young people, especially from regional and rural areas and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The review has set a target that by 2020, 40 per cent of people aged between 25 and 34 will have attained a qualification at bachelor level or above, an increase from the current rate of 29 per cent.
The students from Bonalbo who have received offers at Southern Cross University are: Kasandra Whitney, Emma Williams, Chloe Byrnes, Nat Roffey, Ruby Dwyer and Jasmine Warrington.
