Getting the transition from pre-school to primary school right can be the key to a child’s success throughout their schooling, according to researchers with Southern Cross University’s School of Education.

Associate Professor Anne Graham, Head of the School of Education, and Dr Michelle Leiminer, a lecturer in early childhood education, will be presenting a seminar hosted by the Coffs Harbour branch of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders at the Coffs Harbour campus tomorrow (August 20).

The seminar is aimed at generating dialogue between primary school educators and those working in pre-schools and child-care centres.

‘Transition to school: Are we getting it right?’ will provide an overview of the latest research into how the transition from pre-school to school can impact on a child’s wellbeing.

“Starting school is a major event in the lives of children, families, teachers and communities. The transition involves changes in physical space, routines, social interactions, type and structure of learning environments, how children see themselves and how adults interact with them,” Professor Graham said.

“Research suggests that how we manage this transition time has significant implications for the wellbeing of children and for their future engagement and success at school.

“Building relationships between key stakeholders - children, families, early childhood educators, teachers and local services - is critical in ensuring children are not only ready for schools but schools are also ready for children.”

Southern Cross University offers a range of education degrees at the Coffs Harbour campus, including the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) which was introduced at the start of 2008. Staff are also involved in a range of research projects through the Centre for Children and Young People. Information on all courses is available at http://www.scu.edu.au/courses/

The seminar will be held at the Coffs Harbour campus from 5.30pm to 7pm.
