Time to apply for scholarships

With the deadline fast approaching, students who could use some extra financial support are being urged to apply for scholarships on offer through Southern Cross University.

A range of scholarship options are available for students applying for entry to the University in 2009, including a number of Vice Chancellor’s scholarships and donor-funded scholarships, supported by businesses, individuals and community groups.

One of the newest scholarship providers is the First National Real Estate Group, which is for the second year supporting two scholarships for undergraduate students commencing a Bachelor of Business at Southern Cross University in 2009.

Principal of the Evans Head branch of First National, Brad Dicinoski, said that a community focus had been the trigger for the scholarships.

“We have 10 offices from Grafton to Byron Bay and although each supports their local communities in their own ways, we wanted to sponsor a worthwhile local activity that all the offices could be involved in,” said Mr Dicinoski.

“It’s a way for the business as a whole to give something back to the community on a broader scale.”

Selection for scholarships is based on academic achievement, personal attributes, contribution to school or community life, and comments from school principals, careers advisers or teachers.

Current year 12 students within the Southern Cross University footprint, reaching from Newcastle to the Greater Gold Coast region can apply for scholarships as part of their application through the STAR early entry scheme. Applications close on September 26 and forms are available through school careers advisors

Non school leavers and prospective students from outside the immediate footprint can apply from September 17 - November 21.

Mr Dicinoski said it was important for corporations to support the talent of the future.

“We are aiming to encourage students who have shown potential to continue with their efforts, while at the same time helping to ensure a better class of candidate for industry in the future,” he said.

“Staff members who are correctly trained and educated are vital, so formally supporting students is an investment in the future for the local business community.”
