Tweed Coast Cup tests the skills of new talent

Southern Cross University students will host a non-profit community surf contest to benefit local high school students on Monday, May 12.

School pupils from four schools in the Tweed and Northern Rivers region will compete in the event which is hosted and conducted by the students at the Tweed Gold Coast campus as part of their Diploma of Sports Management (Surfing Studies) course.

Course lecturer and Vice President of the International Surfing Association, Alan Atkins said the event would give young local surfers the chance to get some valuable practice and experience.

“The event is unique in that it is the only competition in the area where public and private schools get the chance to compete against each other,” said Alan.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to test their skills against people they don’t normally surf with.”
Tweed River High School, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, St Joseph’s College Banora Point and reigning champions Kingscliff High School will do battle in the one day surf showdown.
Alan said the Tweed Coast Cup gave the Southern Cross University students the chance to see first hand how the theory learned in the classroom was put into practice.

“The event gives our students the opportunity to get involved and be responsible for every aspect of organising and running a real life surf event from the designing the entry forms to actually running the event on the beach,” he said.

“It’s about putting the theory into practice and dealing with the unexpected challenges that come up along the way.”

Winners of all the divisions will receive a Surfing Australia High Performance Centre Evaluation, while the winners of the boys, girls and bodyboard open events will walk away with a three month voucher for the Casuarina Beach gym.

Runners-up will receive a variety of surfing merchandise and accessories.

The Tweed Coast Cup will take place on Monday, May 12, with the northern side of Cabarita Beach as preferred primary site, conditions permitting. Secondary locations are Kingscliff or Fingal.

The event has been supported by Tweed Coast Adventures, Byron Bay Gift Hampers, Ocean & Earth and Quikshade.
