University set to train childcare workers of the future

Southern Cross University is gearing up to ensure the children of the future are in good hands thanks to the launch of the new Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) course.

Academics at the Tweed Gold Coast campus are preparing to meet prospective students at a special event next Wednesday, December 3 to give information on the course, which will be offered at SCU Lakeside, Caloola Drive, Tweed Heads, next year. The course, which was introduced in Coffs Harbour this year, is also being offered at the Lismore campus in 2009.

Dr Karen Martin, Associate Professor in Early Childhood Education, said the introduction of the course was timely.

“Early childhood education has become a strong focus for the Commonwealth government and is being given priority as part of a national agenda. This means more funding is likely to be attracted to the area which could result in additional job opportunities,” said Dr Martin.

“Not only that, but given the current climate, it’s the perfect time for people already in the childcare industry to look at upgrading their qualifications.

“Upskilling will ensure they are best equipped to respond to changes and can help them ‘recession-proof’ their career.”

The course enables graduates to teach children from birth to eight years in the private or public sectors and is recognised by all Commonwealth nations.

The recent launch at Tweed Heads was attended by Chief Executive Officer of Early Childhood Australia, Pam Cahir, community childcare workers, primary school principals and teachers and children from local schools and childcare centres who helped to cut the celebratory cake.

The information session next week will provide information to prospective students interested in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, which will both be offered from SCU’s Lakeside campus from next year.

Dr Karen Martin said that students of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)course would develop an indepth understanding of the growth and development of young children and how to work with their families and the community.

“There is a real demand for university qualified staff in this field, and students who complete the course will gain a comprehensive knowledge of the area that translates to a credible qualification that is recognised around the world.”
