Migrants and students needing to undertake an English language test to qualify for Australian immigration, or enrolment in University, no longer have to travel to Brisbane or Sydney to sit the test.
Southern Cross University has just become the first regional site outside the major capital cities to be approved as an official TOEFL English language testing centre.
The University is now able to offer the standard Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), generally on a fortnightly basis, at its Lismore campus.
The English Language Centre at the University’s Lismore campus recently conducted its first successful session of this fully online test.
TOEFL is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world and is used by students and others in many countries to officially demonstrate their English ability for the purpose of obtaining a visa, immigration, employment or entry to University.
Assessment of the four elements of the test: speaking, listening, reading and writing, for all the centres, is undertaken by independent assessors in one overseas location.
Viv Carter, director of the University’s International Office, said that having a TOEFL test facility on campus meant that people who needed to do the test no longer had to travel to Brisbane to do so.
“It is part of our strategy to expand the range of services we offer to international students so that the University can continue to grow its international programs, be a service hub for other international education providers in the region, and attract more overseas students to the region,” he said.
Students and migrants who wish to undertake the test can get more information and book online at www.toefl.com They can also take a practice test, get tips and advice and find out what accommodation can be made for people with a disability.
