Casino student Nathan Taylor is still pinching himself. The 18-year-old can’t believe he is $15,000 richer after winning a prestigious scholarship to study at Southern Cross University.
Nathan, who won the Mayne Investments Scholarship, will begin his Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws degree this month.
A former St Mary’s High School Casino student, Nathan was last year's regional winner of the Lions Youth of the Year competition. He also competed at state level in inter-school debating contests and was the captain of the Far North Coast rugby union team.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I had won the scholarship,” Nathan said. “The financial impact will be of enormous benefit. It will mean I will be able to reduce my part-time work and focus much more on getting good academic results in my studies.
“I researched different universities but chose to study at SCU because of the good reputation of its business and law schools and also because it seemed that there was more opportunity to have an interactive learning experience. The class sizes are smaller and there is more personal support given and involvement with the lecturers.
“I thrive on debate and discussion and I didn’t want to go to a university where I would just be a number in the crowd.
“Also, I am glad that I can live at home for a bit longer while I study. I have an incredibly supportive family. We foster a lot of children and it’s nice to all pitch in together and feel we are making a difference in someone’s life.”
Nathan is one of over 100 recipients of scholarships being given to both new and continuing students at Southern Cross University this year, at its three locations in Lismore, Coffs Harbour and the Tweed and Gold Coast region.
Scholarship presentation ceremonies will be held at Coffs Harbour today, Lismore tomorrow and at Tweed Heads on Thursday. Media are welcome to attend.
