Applying the knowledge of the ancient Chinese sages to contemporary life is the topic of a free public talk tomorrow, Thursday 29 July at Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus.

Chairman of the Singapore-based Petroships Investment Pte Ltd, and Corporate Associate of the Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, Mr Alan Chan will present ‘Ancient Chinese Wisdoms for Modern Living,’ sharing his personal insights into how Chinese philosophy and classics can be put into practice in our daily lives.

Mr Chan, who is also a popular speaker at corporate events, said Chinese philosophy had a broad and timeless appeal.

“Chinese philosophy is thousands of years old, yet it is still relevant today and by adopting some of the basic principles we can cultivate our characters,” said Mr Chan.

“The philosophies provide sound advice in a nutshell to help us solve our daily problems – I call them encapsulated gems.

“Chinese wisdom can be puzzling to some, but in this seminar we will clear away some of the embellishments that have been added over time to explain the philosophies in a comprehensible way.”

Professor Bee Chen Goh, Professor of Law and co-director of Southern Cross University’s Centre for Peace and Social Justice, said it was a great privilege to welcome Mr Chan to the Gold Coast campus.

“Mr Chan is a living example of how the ancient Chinese wisdoms he will talk about can be beneficially translated into contemporary practice, particularly for modern day living and personal ethical conduct,” said Professor Goh.

“This is a rare opportunity for the community to learn more about Chinese wisdoms and learn from someone of Mr Chan’s stature who is willing to share his experiences and valuable personal insights – entry to the talk is free and all are welcome.”

The free public seminar ‘Ancient Chinese Wisdoms for Modern Living’ presented by Mr Alan Chan will take place from 1pm-2pm on Thursday July 29 at Southern Cross University’s new Gold Coast campus on Southern Cross Drive, Bilinga (access via Terminal Drive, Gold Coast Airport).
