Charlotte Marshall and Her Band, all students or graduates of the Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree at Southern Cross University, will be entertaining crowds throughout the day at the SCU Race Day – on tomorrow at Lismore Turf Club.
The band plays a fresh blend of funk, soul and blues, and will be part of the entertainment planned for the fun-filled day.
Charlotte said the band’s music draws from the musical traditions of New Orleans funk, Mississippi blues and 60s jazz, soul and R&B classics, with plenty of originals as well as ‘re-funked covers’.
SCU Race Day is held on the first Saturday in May each year. It is a university-wide event coordinated by the Office of Sport & Cultural Activities (OSCA) for students and staff to get together and enjoy a day of racing, entertainment and events.
The six-race program, including the running of the SCU Cup at 3.30pm, will also feature ‘Fashions on the Field’ with prizes in several ‘best dressed’ categories and a tug-o-war competition.
Winners of each category – best dressed female, best dressed male, best hat and ‘wackiest and most out there outfit’ – will each receive a $100 gift voucher donated by local businesses.
The winning tug-o-war team will win a $100 party sponsored by the Unibar and café.
There are still some tickets available from the Unibar up until 5pm today. The $10 tickets include free entry, transport to and from the races, a free barbecue, a complementary drink and live entertainment.
Buses are being provided from Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Tweed and Gold Coast campuses and also from Orion and Magellan Colleges.
For more information phone Ann-Maree Wilkinson, OSCA student affairs officer on 6620 3889.
