Students, teachers, artists, art lovers and members of the public still have the opportunity to attend a series of interesting visual arts lectures at Southern Cross University in Lismore and Byron Bay tomorrow and on Saturday.

Tickets are available at the door for the lectures being presented by ARTspan 2010, in partnership with the University and the Byron Bay Writers Festival.

ARTspan is an annual visual arts lecture program held in collaboration with Creative Arts, NSW Department of Education and Training.

Friday’s lectures are being held in the Whitebrook Theatre at Southern Cross University’s Lismore campus from 9am-3.30pm. Saturday’s lectures are being held in the Southern Cross University Room at the Byron Bay Community Centre, Jonson Street, from 10am-4.30pm.

Russell Storer, curator, contemporary Asian art, Queensland Art Gallery, is one of the guest lecturers on both days. Russell most recently was one of the curatorial team that worked on the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane.

Also speaking on both days, contemporary art critic and blogger Andrew Frost will talk about his idea of what's hot and what is not in the world of art; Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, exhibiting Filipino artists at the recent Asia Pacific Triennial, will talk about their experiences working as installation and collaborative artists; and Wendy Ramsay from the Department of Education, will discuss the various types of art writing and how to be successful at them, especially when applied to your own art practice. She will also discuss how to construct short and extended written examination responses in the HSC Visual Arts written examination.

The guest speakers will come together in a panel discussion on Saturday to discuss ‘Intention versus interpretation – is an artwork successful because it conveys the intention of the artist?’

Full day tickets are $55 and $36 for students; single sessions are $17. Tickets are available at the door on both days.
