Rival Gold Coast high schools and universities will battle it out at the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow, August 5, in the finals of a mooting competition aimed at helping our lawyers of the future learn how to argue a case in court.

Year 11 and 12 Palm Beach Currumbin High School pupils, who have been mentored by Southern Cross University law students, will go head-to-head with students from Varsity College who have been coached by students from Bond University.

The hypothetical legal battle, which is being run with support from Queensland Police, will deal with a negligence action involving a bullying incident at a high School and an injury to a student as a result of the bullying, a very topical issue at the moment. Is there a responsibility placed on the school to ensure bullying, if it does take place, is quickly dealt with?

Southern Cross University student Janice Bell said she felt confident her team was shaping up well for the finals.

“The first part of training consisted of going over all the questions with the students, and then we covered other essential aspects like the language they need to use and the procedures they should follow - as well as doing some dry-run moots so they know what to expect on the day,” said Janice.

“The students have all done really well and are very enthusiastic – all of them are now hoping to study law next year.

“They were terrified at the start, so it’s been very rewarding watching them progress and gain confidence – and it’s been a great opportunity for us as University students to put the theory we learn into practice.”

The students involved will learn more about the law that they are studying as part of their Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies subjects, how cases are prepared and argued in court, the importance of preparation, how the law interfaces with life and how to speak well in a public forum.

The experience will teach students about the law, how to be good public speakers and how to think quickly on their feet as well as how to work effectively in a team environment.
