A distinguished academic, Professor Tim Hinkin from Cornell University in New York, will deliver a leadership and management unit aimed at tourism industry professionals at Southern Cross University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Professor Hinkin is the Georges and Marian St Laurent Professor of Applied Management at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, where he has taught since 1992. He also serves as the Richard J and Monene P Bradley Director of Graduate Studies. Prior to attending graduate school, he worked for Hyatt Hotels and Sysco Corporation.

The unit, Leading and Managing People, will be the first from the Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management to be taught by intensive mode in 2013 and it is envisaged that more units will be offered by this mode throughout the year.

“This unit is a fantastic opportunity for tourism industry professionals to further develop their leadership and management skills,” the head of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Professor Elizabeth Roberts, said.

“In order to meet the needs of industry professionals, the unit will be delivered in intensive mode over two, three day blocks in March. The unit will provide an advanced analysis of leadership and teamwork within the context of the modern organisation.

“For this unit to be taught by Professor Hinkin is also a coup for Southern Cross University. Hospitality industry professionals across the globe aspire to take courses at the prestigious Cornell Hotel School, and SCU is delighted to bring Cornell Professor Tim Hinkin to the Gold Coast to teach this leadership unit.”

Completion of the unit will provide students with one unit credit towards the full Master’s program (12 units) or the earlier exit points of the Graduate Diploma (8 units) or the Graduate Certificate (4 units).

The unit will be taught from March 8 to 10 and then from March 22 to 24 at SCU’s Gold Coast campus. For further information about the unit and entry requirements, contact Jane McLennan, student liaison officer on (07) 5506 9342 or at [email protected]. Applications close on February 15.
