A free concert featuring brothers Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, considered to be Australia’s finest guitar duo, will be held at Southern University’s Coffs Harbour campus on Wednesday, August 12, at 6.30pm.

The concert is one of the key events of the Southern Cross Arts Festival, which has been running throughout the year under the guidance of artistic director Professor Matthew Marshall, from the University’s School of Arts and Social Sciences.

“We are absolutely delighted to have the Grigoryan brothers perform at Coffs Harbour. They are outstanding musicians, who have toured extensively throughout Australia and overseas including Europe, the United States and the Middle East,” Professor Marshall said.

The ARIA-award winning Grigoryan brothers have released six duo albums, including the most recent ‘This Time’, which includes works by internationally acclaimed composers. The brothers have also performed with symphony orchestras and at international festivals in Australia and Europe.

Professor Marshall, who is himself an acclaimed international guitarist, said the duo’s music extended from classical into genres including Latin, jazz, folk and contemporary music.

As part of the Southern Cross Arts Festival, an exhibition of works from the University’s visual arts Honours students will also be on display at the campus, from August 8 to 21. A $1000 prize for the best artwork, to be judged by Dr Leigh Summers from the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, will be announced on August 12. Graduates of the SCU Bachelor of Contemporary Music will also be performing on campus.

“Through the Southern Cross Arts Festival we are showcasing the outstanding talent that is being developed at the University in the creative arts. This is a great opportunity to showcase this talent to the Coffs Harbour community,” he said.
