SCU among best 150 young universities

Southern Cross University has been named among the 150 best young universities in the world in 2016 by Times Higher Education.

The Times Higher Education 150 Under 50 Rankings 2016 celebrates young universities that have made a great impact on the global stage in years rather than centuries and showcases the future rising university stars.

The 150 Under 50 Rankings 2016 uses the same 13 performance indicators as the flagship Times Higher Education World University Rankings - measuring institutions on their teaching, research, citations, international outlook and knowledge transfer. The methodology places less emphasis on reputation, reflecting the shorter establishment timeframe of these universities.

Southern Cross University was last year also ranked in the top 500 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016.

Southern Cross University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee said these latest international rankings were further evidence of the University’s growing profile in teaching and research.

“At just 22-years old, we have developed world-class research in areas including the environmental sciences, forestry, geochemistry, nursing, zoology and oceanography,” Professor Lee said.

“We performed exceptionally well in the Excellence in Research for Australia 2015 national report, achieving the rating of ‘at world-class standard’ or above in 24 research areas and will continue to build on this success.”

Professor Lee said the University had a strong commitment to providing new opportunities for students.

“We have introduced new courses in disciplines such as engineering and in allied health for our local students, as well as new ways of delivering postgraduate courses online.”
