Brazilian and Chinese recruits at the Liverpool International Academy are adding an international flavour to the high performance experience for the region’s junior players, ahead of this weekend’s Champions League final which sees the Academy’s namesake Liverpool FC take on Real Madrid.

Australia’s first Liverpool Academy, based at Southern Cross University’s Lismore campus, has created a unique opportunity for students studying degrees in health and human sciences to help deliver a program under the direction of Southern Cross alumnus and Academy Head of Strength and Conditioning Will Alexander.

Two international students - Alex Argolo from Brazil and Junze Chen from China - chose to study at Southern Cross specifically to be part of the Liverpool Academy program.

Academy General Manager Scott Collis said the program had been bolstered with Alex and Junze joining the team to assist with injury management.

“Alex and Junze have been fantastic," he said. "They are extremely professional and committed, adding great expertise.”

Alex Argolo decided to move from Brazil to Australia to study a Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.

“While considering where to study, one detail caught my attention. Lismore hosted the international academy of one of the greatest clubs in the world, Liverpool FC. And to my surprise, the Academy worked in partnership with Southern Cross University,” Alex said.

“It’s a great opportunity.”

Junze Chen, who is studying a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, agreed.

“My home is located in Shandong province. I decided to choose Southern Cross as my next study location and working with the Academy allows me to obtain more experience in my field of study,” Junze said.

“Liverpool FC is the best club I have worked with, and of course this experience is definitely valuable for me. It is not only a club but also a home.”

Both men are eagerly awaiting the Champions League final on Sunday morning, along with other coaches and players in the Academy program.

“Liverpool Football Club is huge in Brazil and everyone knows the Champions League,” Alex said.

Junze said the Champions League was also well known in China.

“Most of my friends are supporting Liverpool in the final and they are quite envious when they know I work with the Academy,” he said.
