Have you ever wondered what a career as an ocean researcher would be like? Or aspired to be an outstanding teacher? Is the virtual business world an arena where you see yourself working? Or have your considered what options you have in science, engineering or as a health professional?
Come along to Open Day at Southern Cross University Lismore on Saturday July 28 to discover an educational experience that will open new horizons.
Our lecturers, staff and student ambassadors will come together from 10am-3pm on Open Day to showcase study options, new courses, unique campus features, and answer all your questions regarding gaining entry to university, career opportunities, sport and recreation, accommodation and student support. Campus walking tours will be held every hour and a shuttle bus service will depart every 30 minutes to transport visitors around campus.

Discover what a research career on the high seas looks like with our researchers on board the Southern Cross University research boat used in estuary and coastal systems, as they show off the equipment and explain how it’s used in experiments. The 7-metre La Nina will be on display in the Plaza throughout the day, with course information sessions giving you the lowdown on study and career options in marine, forest and environmental science.
Open Day guests can check out the marine science touch pool to experience creatures that are slimy, prickly and a bit interesting, all day in the ZEST forecourt and can watch drone action technology currently used in Southern Cross University research to locate and monitor sharks.
From 2019 Southern Cross University will launch the Graduate Diploma in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities an online course which responds to an increasing demand for skilled professionals in this area following the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) rollout. The University now also offers a double degree in Psychological Science and Laws and online Master and Graduate Diploma courses in both Mental Health and Mental Health Nursing, with shorter ‘Study Period’ intakes in August and October. From August, Registered Nurses can study the Graduate Certificate in Primary Healthcare Nursing online, with application in healthcare leadership.

Southern Cross University has developed a 25-week pathway for international students wanting to study nursing in Australia, offered at the Lismore campus. The English Language Program component has the first intake in August, followed by the Undergraduate Qualifying Program (UQP) in October, which prepares international students for undergraduate study in nursing and allied health. Students with the required proficiency in English can begin at the UQP stage, before the Bachelor of Nursing intake in Session 1 from March 2019.
Aspiring writers can study the Graduate Diploma of Creative Writing online part-time over two years, with this new postgraduate course now available online.
Open Day guests can get creative in the ‘Arts Hub’, getting their hands dirty in the art and design workshop running all day. Current students from the Bachelor of Contemporary Music will entertain with sweet vibes all day and give guests the chance to join in on a live jam session. Experience an Indigenous Welcome to Country, dance performances and art workshops. Discover our Indigenous Knowledge course at the information session ‘An old way of knowing and a new way of understanding’.
Be transported into a fairytale world with exciting legal matters, when the Head of the School of Law and Justice Professor Bill MacNeil returns for round 2 of Judge Billy’s moot court with mock trials of students and staff in character from 1pm onwards, with The Queen of Hearts vs the Knave of Hearts, and Dolores Umbridge vs Hermoine Granger, followed by an afternoon tea.
Guests can get their sporting game on with a visit to the Southern Cross Football Centre, home of Australia's only Liverpool International Academy; or watch our own SCU Gold Rats take on Bangalow Rebels in the Far North Coast Rugby Union match at the University's Maurie Ryan Oval.
