Orientation for Session 1 has kicked off today, giving new students the opportunity to join a club, learn about their course, meet other students and chill out with live performances, all while learning about how to get the most from their studies once classes start on March 5.

Whether studying on-campus, online or as an international student, Orientation is designed to provide essential tools to set students up to succeed in their studies.

The week-long event aims to connect new students with Southern Cross lecturers, services and facilities through course information sessions and workshops.

Local Aboriginal Elders at each of the University’s campuses at Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast and Lismore will host a Welcome to Country from the traditional custodians of the Land upon which we meet and study.

Orientation activities include:

  • Library tours
  • Campus tours
  • Course information sessions
  • Specialised information sessions, including academic skills, technology and Get Orientated
  • Clubs and societies information stalls
  • Live music
  • Free food
  • Exercise classes

One of our popular Orientation initiatives, the School Host Program, sees current students meet and greet first year students from the same course. This personalises the Orientation experience at Southern Cross and connects commencing students to 2nd and 3rd year students who are able to assist them in finding out about university services and facilities.

For the first time this year we'll be trying out our new throwable microphone, CatchBox, a soft cushioned cube that's wirelessly connected to the PA. In a Q&A-type session the CatchBox is thrown from person-to-person rather than passing around a microphone.

Try out the CatchBox at the Get Orientated sessions:

Lismore - Plaza: Tuesday 9:30-10am; Wednesday 10:15-10:45am; Thursday 10:15-10:45am

Gold Coast – Building C Level 1 lecture theatre: Tuesday 10:30-11am; Wednesday 10-10:30am; Thursday 9:45-10:15am

Coffs Harbour – D Block theatre: Wednesday 10-10:30am

But it’s not all academic, there’s plenty of time to socialise and meet new friends too. The fun stuff includes puppies, fairy floss, popcorn, photobooths.

There are also chances to win Co-op vouchers in the Discover Southern Cross University Competition.

Relax, have fun and meet other students with Hit the Play Button – featuring sports beach volleyball, touch, ultimate and 6-a-side soccer – at Coolangatta Beach on Thursday March 1 (3–6pm QLD) and during Week 1 at Lismore campus oval on Wednesday March 7 (3–6pm NSW).
