Renowned curator and festival director Rhoda Roberts AO will be a guest panellist for the first event in an exciting new series of talks – Thursday Night Live! – launching on February 8, 2017 at Lismore Quadrangle.*

Presented by the Lismore Regional Gallery and Southern Cross University, Thursday Night Live! is a new and ongoing program of talks aiming to put thought-provoking and big ideas in the spotlight. It will be held at the gallery’s event space on the second Thursday of every month.

“Delve into the latest, sometimes dangerous, ideas in art, culture, science, politics and the lives behind those driving the scene,” Quadrangle Placemaking Officer Marisa Snow said.

“This is a thought-provoking and exciting program that will make you think, learn and sometimes squirm! Join us for a drink with friends, and immerse yourself in a world of new ideas. Every event will pose a ‘provocation’ to which speakers and audiences can respond.”

Commencing at 6pm next Thursday, February 8, the first provocation will be: Do we need art to create meaning in public space?

The discussion will be facilitated by Southern Cross University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adam Shoemaker. Also confirmed on the panel is leading public artist Craig Walsh.

“The context for the discussion is around the role of participatory art in the public realm to connect and create inclusiveness within a community,” Marisa explained.

“Through Rhoda’s leading work in curating large-scale ceremony we will also be exploring the role for modern-day ritual.”

Following the conversation will be an open Q&A session with audience members.

Thursday Night Live! events are free and doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Slate Café will be serving food and drinks from 5pm.

*The address is 11 Rural Street, Lismore.
