To celebrate 25 years in higher education on Australia’s East Coast, Southern Cross University has gifted 25 anniversary scholarships to outstanding first-year students.

The 2018 King’s Christian College school captain Isaac Hawkins, 18, is studying a double degree in Law and Business at the Gold Coast campus, which was established more recently in 2010 and overlooks North Kirra Beach.

It was during a grade 11 trip to the Brisbane Supreme Court that Isaac met with politicians and learned more about Australia’s legal system which fascinated him.

“Business and law really interests me and I want to use it to make a change in the world,” said Isaac.

“I want to work in corporate employment or contract law and one day start my own business to help other people to know how to go about things properly.”

After years of playing school rugby union, Isaac is now balancing his studies with playing rugby on the Gold Coast and coaching younger teams at his former school.

“Southern Cross University is conveniently right next to the beach, so I get to enjoy the work-life balance of a beach lifestyle alongside studying and sport,” he said.

“Some people struggle to know what they want to do, but knowing what you want and going for it makes the hard work worthwhile and I am really enjoying the degree so far.”

Isaac said he counts his parents and school teachers as his mentors: “they’ve helped me so much and encouraged me to pursue my passions.”

Southern Cross University’s 25th Anniversary Scholars are from across the University’s original campuses in Lismore and Coffs Harbour and newer additions Gold Coast and online. They were chosen based on their 2018 grade 12 results and a personal statement regarding their career ambitions and community contributions.

“I wasn’t expecting to receive this scholarship, but it is a huge honour and help. A highlight of study so far has been meeting lots of amazing people and the great student support,” Isaac said.

Direct applications for study at Southern Cross University are now open at scu.edu.au for the July 2019 intake.
