The National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine at Southern Cross University, in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre at the Consulate General of India, are hosting a free community yoga event at their Lismore campus to mark International Day of Yoga, Tuesday 21 June.

Come join friends and colleagues for a 50-minute session of yoga, suitable for beginners to advanced, followed by the opportunity to connect with fellow community members over complimentary herbal teas, coffee, and nourishing refreshments. Each attendee will take home a brand-new yoga mat.

International Day of Yoga aims to celebrate and bring awareness to the many benefits of practicing yoga, the physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India. Yoga is widely researched and has been found to be a useful and cost-effective therapy for a wide range of mental and physical conditions.

Professor Romy Lauche, Deputy Director of Research at the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine and one of the top-ranked yoga research experts in the world, says that yoga is an integral modality of non-pharmacological therapies – one of the pillars of research focus at the Centre.

“The National Centre hosts an array of experts in the benefits of yoga and other non-pharmacological therapies, so it is great to be offering this event for the community to bring the benefits of yoga to people who may really need it at the moment. With the lingering trauma resulting from the floods, yoga is a positive way to reduce stress, which in turn brings a number of additional health benefits. We hope the Lismore community can take some time out for themselves to practice yoga and enjoy a morning connecting with others.”

The Centre is working with the Indian government and universities to bring yoga experts to Lismore from India, with the support of the Consulate General, who will promote the strengths of AYUSH systems in the management of various diseases and conditions and develop inter-disciplinary linkages while research in such systems.

The event will commence at 10:00am on Tuesday 21st June, in J Block Auditorium, located next to the Southern Cross University Deck and Lounge. Onsite parking is available.
