It’s Orientation week at Southern Cross University, with nearly 3,000 new students gearing up to begin their studies in 2024.
O Week activities stretch across all three main campuses and online this week with food, games and giveaways all on the program.
Marking the start of the academic year, O Week is an opportunity for new students to get familiar with the campus, meet academic staff and join clubs and societies. It’s also a chance to prepare for studying, as students learn new systems and processes, enrol in their courses and meet their peers.
“Today was really good to make connections and embrace the start of our journey at Southern Cross. It’s very welcoming and diverse with lots of different walks of life.”
First cab off the rank for orientation activities is Coffs Harbour campus on Monday 26 February, followed by Lismore on Tuesday 27, Gold Coast on Wednesday 28 and online orientation on Thursday 29 February. Friday is reserved for social activities with a special Hit the Play Button event for Gold Coast and Lismore students at Coolangatta and an after party on Friday afternoon for Coffs Harbour students.
“Orientation is an important part of preparing for study, but it’s also a lot of fun,” said Brendon Nelson, Vice-President (Students) and Registrar at Southern Cross University.
“We have students coming straight from school, as well as people returning to study after a break. Orientation is a great chance to meet people, to get set up for success with advice and handy tips, and to meet the faculty and support teams that are here to help our students achieve their goals.
“This year we are welcoming around 3,000 new students into the Southern Cross family.”
Olivia Dunbar attended Orientation at Coffs Harbour campus today together with friends Tess Dowdle and Emily Parmenter. The three, who completed high school in Kempsey together, will also begin their Bachelor degrees together next week at Southern Cross University.
“Today was really good to make connections and embrace the start of our journey at Southern Cross. It’s very welcoming and diverse with lots of different walks of life,” said Olivia, who will commence a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.
Orientation this year marks an extra special occasion as the University celebrates its 30th anniversary.
