Breanna Hastings’ path to university has not been conventional, but her story proves that with determination, self-belief and commitment dreams are achievable.
The 20-year-old is in her second year of Southern Cross University’s Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business double degree. She juggles her study with being a mum to four-year-old Leah and battling alopecia, a disease which has left her with little hair.
On Tuesday 9 June Ms Hastings will provide guidance and inspiration to parents and students in Grafton as part of 'Toolbox: A Parenting Festival', where she will take part in the University is Possible discussion.
“I attended a Law seminar at SCU and met a lady who had children while completing her law degree. That really inspired me and made me realise I would also be able to do it,” Ms Hastings said.
“I would say that university is achievable for everyone. There are a variety of pathways to be able to attend and once you enrol you can really tailor your studying to your individual needs.
“There are also a huge amount of support services available to help along the way. If you are motivated and dedicated enough you will be able to do it.”
Ms Hastings said there were challenges juggling motherhood with full-time study, but by setting a routine she had struck a happy balance.
“I love the feeling of accomplishment that I get once I finish exams and see my grades. Knowing that I am working towards a career that is important to me is fulfilling.”
The discussion is being hosted by Stellar, which is a partnership between the Clarence Valley Industry Education Forum, Southern Cross University and the University of New England aimed at improving the region’s higher education participation rates.
It will also include speakers from Southern Cross University and the University of New England, who will provide information about various university pathways, scholarships and tips for supporting students as they transition from school to university.
University is Possible will be held on Tuesday 9 June from 6.30pm at the Sir Earle Page Library, 126-144 Pound Street, Grafton.
